Pregnancy and alcohol
The adverse effects of alcohol on unborn babies was first discovered during the 1970's and termed FAS. Foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can lead to the birth of children suffering from:
• Heart defects
• Deformed limbs
• Mental retardation

FAS facts
Drinking as little as 1 unit per day during pregnancy (the equivalent of 2 glasses of wine) can produce a 1 in 10 chance of giving birth to a FAS baby.
