Stretch your calves - Calve stretching

It is important that muscles are stretch before and after exercise, especially if a specific muscle has been used during the performance of a particular movement.

For example, during running the calves play a major part in the execution of the movement. Thus, this area should be stretched thoroughly prior and after the exercise.

Purpose

To increase the range of motion in the lower leg.

Muscles involved

The calve muscles are located in the back of the lower leg.

Performance guidelines

• Stand two feet away from a solid immovable object. Lean into the object.
• Place one foot forward and bend the knee of the front foot.
•Hold the back leg straight - it's heel should not leave the ground.
•Press your upper body into the object you are leaning against.
•Hold for 20 - 30 seconds. Repeat 2 - 3 times on both legs.
