It is important that muscles are stretched before and after exercise, especially if a specific muscle has been used during the performance of a particular movement.
For example, during rowing the back plays a major part in the execution of the movement. Thus, this area should be stretched thoroughly prior and after the exercise.
Purpose
To loosen the upper back and increase blood flow.
Muscles involved
The latissimus dorsi and the trapezium muscles of the back.
Performance guidelines
• Hold your arms out in front of you.
• Clasp your hands together.
• Push your arms out as far as possible.
• Aim to stretch the upper back as far as possible.
• Hold for 20 - 30 seconds Repeat 2 - 3 times.
